The short answer: SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps your website appear in Google search results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) helps your business get mentioned when people ask AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews for a recommendation. You need both, and SEO comes first, because most of what makes AI tools mention a business is built on good SEO.
This article explains why the difference matters for Philippine businesses right now, where SEO and GEO overlap, where they differ, and what to do first if your budget and time are limited.
Why this matters in the Philippines now
Filipinos have adopted AI tools faster than most countries. According to the Digital 2026 report by Meltwater and We Are Social, 42.4% of Filipinos aged 16 and above used ChatGPT in the past month. That ranks the Philippines sixth in the world, well above the global average of 26.5%.
The same report found that many Filipinos discover new brands through social platforms. Put together, this means your customers no longer find businesses in one place. Some search on Google. Some ask ChatGPT. Some see you on Facebook or TikTok first, then check your website or ask an AI tool whether you are reliable.
A business that only works on one of these channels misses the others. SEO and GEO together cover the two that depend most on your website: search engines and AI answers.
What SEO does
SEO improves your website so it ranks higher on Google and Bing when people search for what you offer, such as “catering services Muntinlupa” or “solar installer Laguna.” The result is a link to your website in the search results. When someone clicks, they land on your page.
SEO work usually includes:
- Making sure search engines can find and read every important page
- Fast loading, especially on mobile
- Pages that target the words customers actually search for
- A complete Google Business Profile for local searches
- Links and mentions from other reputable websites
What GEO does
GEO makes your website and business information easy for AI tools to find, understand and cite. When someone asks, “Who is a reliable caterer in Muntinlupa for a 100-guest event?”, the AI tool searches the web, reads a set of sources, and writes an answer. GEO increases the chance that your business is one of the sources it uses and one of the names it mentions.

Where SEO and GEO overlap
Most GEO work is SEO done thoroughly. Google states that its AI Overviews and AI Mode use the same search index and quality systems as regular search, and that no special optimization is needed beyond good SEO practice. In other words, if Google can’t find or trust your page, its AI features won’t cite it either.
Both SEO and GEO depend on:
- A website that search engines and AI crawlers are allowed to access
- Clear, accurate information about what you offer and where you operate
- Helpful content written for real customer questions
- A good reputation on other websites: reviews, directories and mentions
Where they differ
The result you get. SEO earns a link in a list of results. GEO earns a mention or citation inside an answer, which may or may not include a link.
How people ask. Google searches are usually short: “dentist BGC.” AI questions are usually full sentences with context: “I need a dentist in BGC who accepts HMO and is open on Saturdays.” Pages that answer specific questions like this, in plain language, are more likely to be cited.
Which crawlers matter. SEO focuses on Googlebot and Bingbot. GEO also depends on AI crawlers. For example, OpenAI says websites that block its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
What other sites say. AI tools often compare several sources before naming a business. Consistent business details and positive reviews across Google, Facebook and directories carry more weight in AI answers than many owners expect.
How you measure it. SEO results show up in rankings, clicks and traffic in Google Search Console. GEO results are harder to track. The most practical method is to ask AI tools the questions your customers ask, every month, and note whether and how your business appears.
What Philippine businesses should do first
If your time and budget are limited, work in this order:
- Fix access. Check that your website is indexed on Google and that your robots.txt file does not block Googlebot or OAI-SearchBot.
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Fill in categories, services, service areas, hours and photos. For local businesses, this is often the fastest win for both Google and AI answers.
- State your basic facts clearly on your website. Business name, services, areas served, address, phone number and hours, written in text, not only in images.
- Answer your customers’ top questions. List the ten questions customers ask you most often, and answer each one clearly on your website, with prices, timelines or steps where possible.
- Make your details consistent everywhere. Your name, address and phone number should match on your website, Facebook page, Google profile and directory listings.
- Collect reviews. Ask satisfied customers for reviews on Google and reply to them politely.
- Check AI answers monthly. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI the questions your customers would ask, and note what they say about you.
Steps 1 to 3 help both SEO and GEO immediately. Steps 4 to 7 build results over the following months.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Relying only on Facebook. A Facebook page alone gives AI tools and search engines very little structured information about your business. A website you control fills that gap.
- Putting key information only in images. Price lists, service menus and contact details posted as images are hard for search engines and AI tools to read.
- Blocking AI crawlers by accident. Some security plugins and firewall settings block crawlers by default. Ask your developer to check.
- Treating GEO as a replacement for SEO. Without a strong SEO foundation, GEO work has little to build on.
- Expecting guarantees. No one can guarantee a first-place ranking or an AI recommendation. Good work increases your chances; be careful with anyone who promises more.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to choose between SEO and GEO?
No. GEO builds on SEO, so the most efficient approach is to work on both together.
Is GEO only for big companies?
No. Small and local businesses often benefit most, because AI tools answer many local questions such as “best bakery near Alabang.”
How long does it take to see results?
Fixing access and business information can take effect within days or weeks. Rankings and AI mentions for competitive searches usually take several months.
Can I do this myself?
Many first steps, such as completing your Google Business Profile and answering customer questions on your website, can be done in-house. Technical checks and ongoing content work are where outside help usually saves time.
